At the foot of Tateyama there is a small town Ashikuraji. Because of its unique environment they send out many mountain guides. Five guides of this town is sent to the first Antarctic wintering party in Japan. The story at that event is well performed in the movie 'Nankyoku Tairiku' (Antarctic Continent). They are called 'Ashikuraji five persons group' and they played an important roll in building the Antarctic observation base which is called 'Showa Kichi'. As they were well trained in Tateyama climbing, they can well endure harsh blizzard. After 50 years have passed, that building is very strong and well used as the stock warehouse. Although not the official record, they are said to be the first to land on the Antarctic. Their bravery, power and teamwork contributed the success of this work and gave dream to many Japanese people.
